Where to find dried chillies, chipotles, tomatillos and more in Australia

In my Street Food: Mexican Fiesta and Modern Mexican cooking classes, people are enamoured of the amazing flavours and want to recreate these at home. While it’s not always easy to find a shop local to you for these ingredients, most of the shops below offer online ordering and home delivery. One of our students shared this tip too:

I thought I would let you know that I have found another source for a lot of the Mexican ingredients. The Fiji Market is at the very south end of King St Newtown. I went in knowing they have interesting ingredients, and was pleasantly surprised.

They stock achiote paste, masa harina, tinned tomatillos, chipotles in adobo sauce, a number of hot sauces, chipotle chilli powder, dried (as well as tinned) black turtle beans, and (most excitingly) even corn husks! They also had a number of different dried chillies, and a lot of other ingredients for Mexican and South American cooking, and have just started stocking fresh tortillas too. Hopefully it will provide another source for you to let people know about – the more that people buy from them, the more stock they will hold and the better for the rest of us…

    Hi,
Can you please help me find access to a range of chillies. I’m a chilli freak, and the ‘sauces ‘ available in supermarkets are not worth buying.
    I’m DESPERATE!
    Can you help.
    Many thanks for your time,
    Suzanne.

Hi Suzanne! I know how you feel. If you’re looking for finished sauces, the sites listed here carry quite a good range. I’ve seen some fresh chillies, including Jalapenos, Habaneros and Poblanos (one of my favourites) at the South Melbourne Markets. Have you tried them lately?

    P.S. I’m in Victoria.

    Cheers,

That’s great to hear – I’ve seen them in my local Coles too – Waterloo. Unfortunately the supply is quite irregular. Let me know if you find any more reliable sources!
